Satyendra Nath Bose

1894–1974 · Kolkata

In 1924 he sent Einstein a new way of counting the states of light. Einstein translated it into German himself and had it published.

Particles called bosons are named after him.

He founded the Indian Statistical Institute in Kolkata in 1931.

The Mahalanobis distance measures how unusual a data point is, and is used from banking to biology. His birthday, 29 June, is India’s National Statistics Day.
