Leonhard Euler
In 1734 he solved the Basel problem: 1 + 1/4 + 1/9 + 1/16 + … = π²/6.
He went almost completely blind in 1771 and kept working, dictating to assistants. We owe him the notation f(x), e and i.

Sofia Kovalevskaya
In 1874 she became the first woman in modern Europe to earn a doctorate in mathematics, and later a full professor in Stockholm.
She said she first met calculus on the wallpaper of her childhood room, which was papered with old lecture notes.
