Hypatia

c. 360s–415 CE · Alexandria

She taught mathematics, astronomy and philosophy in Alexandria, and worked on commentaries on the great texts of her day.

She was killed by a mob in 415 CE, and became a symbol of learning under threat.

The word “algebra” comes from al-jabr in the title of his book, and “algorithm” from the Latin form of his name.

His writing helped carry Indian numerals, zero included, to the Arab world and on to Europe.
