Maryam Mirzakhani

1977–2017 · Tehran

She won gold at the International Mathematical Olympiad in 1994 and 1995, the second time with a perfect score.

In 2014 she became the first woman to win the Fields Medal, for her work on curved surfaces. This photo is from that year.

He asked for a sphere inside a cylinder on his tomb, to mark his proof that the sphere fills two-thirds of it.
