Blaise Pascal
At about 19 he built a mechanical calculator, the Pascaline, to help with his father’s tax sums.
His 1654 letters with Fermat about a gambling puzzle founded probability theory. The triangle named after him was known centuries earlier in India, Persia and China.

He founded the Indian Statistical Institute in Kolkata in 1931.
The Mahalanobis distance measures how unusual a data point is, and is used from banking to biology. His birthday, 29 June, is India’s National Statistics Day.
