Alan Turing

1912–1954 · London

His 1936 paper on computable numbers described the Turing machine, the idea behind every computer.

He led codebreaking work on Enigma at Bletchley Park, and appears on the Bank of England £50 note.

Largely self-taught, he turned logic into algebra in The Laws of Thought (1854).

Every digital circuit runs on his true-and-false arithmetic. He was the first professor of mathematics at Queen’s College, Cork.
